Your dissertation or thesis is automatically copyrighted upon creation. Copyright registration is not required but it does provide certain legal benefits. Among them are that registration establishes a public record of the copyright. That is a requirement before an infringement suit may be filed in the U.S., and it enables a copyright holder to seek claims for statutory damages and attorney’s fees in a lawsuit.
